Culture

Both Chiemsee islands as well as the mainland around Prien offer visitors a wide range of exciting cultural highlights from different periods of history. First stops for art lovers are the exquisite ceiling paintings of Johann Baptist Zimmermann in Prien’s Pfaffkirche church and the 12th Century frescos in the chapel in Urschalling. The art gallery in the old town hall is a key element of Chiemsee’s painting tradition and features collections from various regional and international artists all year round. Fraueninsel, Europe’s oldest artists’ colony, features the “Inselmünster” and the “Zeugnis” gatehouse which dates back to the Carolingian period. While Herreninsel offers visitors the chance to see the state apartments and Augustinian Canons Regular museum, not forgetting Bavarian King Ludwig II.’s fairytale castle of course. In summer 1948, the constitutional convention finalised the basic laws of the German Federal Republic here.
